The Dos and Don’ts of Getting Started with Geodes & Crystals

For thousands of years, humans have turned to geodes and crystals for physical and emotional healing and rehabilitated the body’s aura. They are Mother Earth’s gift to humankind and transfer the extraordinary power of the sun, moon, seas, soil, and mountains to us.

If you are interested in using the incredible power of crystals to improve your well-being, this guide—The Dos and Don’ts of Getting Started with Geodes and Crystals—is for you!

Guide to Geodes

Geodes are hollow rocks containing an inner layer of crystal. The outer layer looks just like any other rock, making them easy to overlook. However, when you open a geode up, you will be greeted by a beautiful display of crystals.

Though 12% of the Earth’s crust is made of
Quartz crystals, Amethyst is the most common mineral found on the inside of a Brazilian geode. However, around the world, Quartz, Agate Calcite, Pyrite, Hematite, Barite, Smithsonite, Celestite, and others, may also be found.

How Geodes Form

Geode formation is a complex process that takes place over thousands or even millions of years. These rocks begin as hollow bubbles inside of igneous and sedimentary rocks that likely formed due to the presence of tree roots or animal burrows. Over time, and with the presence of groundwater, minerals are deposited within these hollow spaces. Changes in temperature or chemistry cause the minerals to precipitate out of the water and harden along the cavity walls.

The first layer is often chalcedony, a microcrystalline form of quartz. As the process continues, however, more and more inwardly pointing crystals can form. Interestingly, geodes may also be discovered without their host rock. This is because the chalcedony that lined the inside of the rock is more durable than the rock itself. So as the rock decomposes or erodes, the solid, intact geodes are left behind.

Where Geodes Can Be Found

Geodes have been discovered in various locations across our planet. In the United States, geodes have been found in Ohio, Missouri, Utah, Iowa, Kentucky and Indiana, Nevada, among other states. However, they have also been discovered in other countries, such as Brazil, Mexico, Morocco, Namibia, and Spain.

The Healing Powers of Geodes

Due to their remarkable metaphysical properties, geodes contain exceptional healing properties that aid in physical, emotional, and spiritual ailments.

Uses for Geodes

Geodes can be used for a multitude of purposes, including assistance with decision-making, facilitating communication between people in the same healing fields or with divine beings, creating good moods and energies, help with meditation, stress relief, and more. The type of crystal a geode contains will determine the benefits it can provide you.

Amethyst Geodes
Filled with Amethyst, these geodes are considered the “Stone of Mind” and contain the power to ease your emotions, calm your mind, enhance your mental state, reduce stress and anger. Though that’s not all, it can bring forth positivity, reduce negativity, bolster willpower, and restrain you from acting on undesirable habits. Amethyst is also known to improve health by stabilizing metabolism, strengthening the immune system, increasing the production of red corpuscles, encouraging tissue rejuvenation, and treating various disorders, such as diabetes. The Amethyst also enhances the third eye, Chakra.

Calcite or Chalcedony Geodes
Containing deposits of one of the most powerful healing crystals, Calcite Geodes are used to raise the energy levels of a space, promote the flow of positive energy, radiation of calming energy, rid energy channels of blockages, and for their energy clearing and cleansing properties.

Citrine Geodes
These geodes are filled with golden Citrine, promoting positive energy, happiness, self-confidence, happiness, and inner strength. Additionally, Citrine geodes help us to tap into our Solar Plexus, aids in digestion, increases physical energy, enhances motivation and inspiration, and offers prosperity and abundance.

Agate- Quartz Geodes
As the name suggests, these geodes are filled with Quartz crystals. Quartz is the most abundant mineral found on Earth’s surface and is the most used natural substance due to its unique physical and chemical properties. Quartz comes in several varieties, including Aventurine, Carnelian, Jasper, Milky Quartz, Morion, Praseolite, Rose Quartz, and Smoky Quartz. Amethyst is a variety of Quartz geodes, as is Agate with its specialty to balance and create manifestation with its Quartz crystals inside.

Guide to Crystals

Crystals are solids with atoms arranged in repeating patterns, called crystal systems. All minerals form in one of seven crystal systems: hexagonal, isometric, monoclinic, orthorhombic, tetragonal, triclinic, and trigonal.

How Crystals Form

Crystals are naturally formed within the Earth when liquids cool and then harden. For example, when liquid rock, or magma, cools down. Additionally, crystals can form within living creatures, and technology was developed to form crystals artificially in a laboratory.

Where Crystals Can Be Found

Most crystals are found within rocks, caves, mountains, and the Earth’s solid bedrock. However, they can also be found within ice and living organisms. Popular locations in the U.S. where you can source your own crystals include Cherokee Ruby & Sapphire Mine in North Carolina, Craters of Diamonds State Park in Arkansas, Emerald Hollow Mine in North Carolina, Graves Mountain in Georgia, Jade Cove in California, and Wegner Quartz Crystal Mine in Arkansas to name a few.

However, they can also be found across our entire planet. Michal travels all over the world to find the best geode rocks and crystals for her clients. They come from places such as Uruguay, Brazil, China, Madagascar, and Mexico.

The Healing Powers of Crystals

The healing power of the crystal is found in each crystal’s unique vibration. Crystals emanate their vibrations at a constant frequency, so when a crystal comes into contact with a lower vibration, it raised the vibration of that object or person to match its own. So, when your body or energy comes into contact with a crystal, it increases your vibration frequency, allowing you to break through mental, physical, and spiritual blockages.

Crystals work with your intentions in a very similar way. Their firm, positive energy intensifies your intention so that you can manifest faster and more effectively.

How to Choose a Crystal or Geode

Crystal vibrations resonate with the energy in our bodies and strengthen us from within. It is vital to find a crystal that you feel a connection to—and to do so; you must follow our dos and don’ts for choosing your crystal:

Dos and Don’ts When Purchasing a Geode or Crystal

DO take the time to find a geode or crystal that connects with you and brings about the feelings that you are seeking.

DON’T purchase a geode or crystal from an unverified shop or website. You may end up with a fake. Check their reviews.

DO program your crystal. In other words, give it a job or a purpose.

DON’T overthink your choice of crystal. Often, the first crystal you connected with is the one that chose you.

DO cleanse your crystal regularly. Check my website on how.

DON’T forget to cleanse your crystals before you use them for the first time.

DO choose check the properties of the stone to see if it fits your intention.

DON’T store crystals in your pocket or a bag, especially if they are soft. (More on that below.)

DO choose a stone that benefits the Chakra you want to balance, the symptoms you wish to address, and the positive things that it will do for you.

Dos and Don’ts of Geode and Crystal Care

Once you have geodes and crystals in your possession, it is important to properly care for them so that you preserve their beauty and utilize them for their healing powers.

The Mohs Hardness Scale

Friedrich Mohs created the Mohs Scale of Hardness in 1822 to measure the relative hardness and resistance to scratching between minerals, 1 being the softest and 10 being the hardest.

The method uses 10 stones to create the scale for testing the hardness of other minerals. It is also a useful tool for determining the processes of care for your crystals. For example, crystals five and under on the Mohs hardness scale should not be placed in water.

Caring for Your Crystals

To ensure that your crystals will continue to work for you for a very long time. It is essential to care for them properly. Depending on the crystal, you may cleanse them with water, the sun, smoke, intent, sound, or Reiki.

Crystals that are Especially Delicate
The following crystals are very fragile because they are soft, comparatively, and should be handled carefully:

● Amber
● Azurite
● Celestite
● Fluorite
● Kyanite
● Opal
● Selenite
● Turquoise

Additionally, any crystal point will be considerably fragile.

How to Clear and Cleanse Your Crystals

One reason why crystals are so beneficial to us is that they absorb the negative energy present in our environment. So, to keep your crystals functioning in a useful way, it is essential to clear and cleanse them regularly, to reset them back to their natural vibration. We recommend cleansing them three to four times per month, depending on the energy your crystals are absorbing.

Crystals can be safely cleansed using the following methods:

Intent
Our intentions are among the most influential powers we possess because our thoughts’ are energy vibrations, just like the crystals. If you genuinely believe, it is possible to cleanse your crystals by merely intending that they do so.

Reiki
Reiki Masters can cleanse their crystals by holding them and giving them Reiki.

Smudging
Hold your crystal over smoke for the amount of time you feel is sufficient.

Sound
Place your crystal anywhere in the room where you will host a sound ceremony, using Tibetan bowls, tuning forks, binary sounds, bells, or vocal tuning.

Water
After you verify that your crystal can be safely exposed to water, submerge it in running water for three minutes to cleanse it.

Certain Crystals That Should Not Be Exposed to Sunlight anyone with color, especially Amethyst, are considered UV sensitive.

The following crystals should not be exposed to sunlight:

● Amethyst
● Ametrine
● Apatite
● Aquamarine
● Aventurine (large boulders are ok)
● Fluorite
● Hiddenite
● Opal
● Rose Quartz (large boulders are ok )
● Super Seven
● Turquoise
● Kunzite
● Jade

Crystals That Should Not Be Exposed to Water

The following crystals should not be exposed to water:

● Selenite
● Wulfenite
● Halite
● Salt crystals
● Sulphur

How to Store Your Crystals

The place in which you store your crystals is just as important as how you cleanse them. Soft and hard crystals should be stored separately so that the softer crystals do not become scratched. Hard crystals should be stored in soft surroundings to preserve their clarity and shine. Any crystals that should not be exposed to water need to be stored far away from damp areas in your home, and crystals that should not be exposed to sunlight need to be stored in dark areas of the house that do not receive direct sun.
