What Is NLP Good For

NLP stands for Neuro-Linguistic Programming. It’s an idea that our behavior is dictated by our thoughts and words. If our thoughts and vocabulary lean towards negativity or stress, our actions will eventually follow suit. So, in essence, if you practice positive thinking and calmness, you can kick the behaviors that don’t serve you and replace them with positive actions.

“Watch your thoughts, they become your words; watch your words, they become your actions; watch your actions, they become your habits; watch your habits, they become your character; watch your character, it becomes your destiny.” ― Lao Tzu

So how can you watch your thoughts? The key is using NLP to change the way you interpret the events of the world around you. Your mind’s eye most times is on autopilot. When something stressful presents itself to you, it’s easy to just accept how you automatically internalize it as if you have no choice. Big, bold visions of exaggerated pain and fear can hinder your ability to cope. But in fact you can hone your visualization skills to change the stories your mind is telling you, and ultimately put them in their place.

If your mind is a movie screen, you are the director. Try this NLP exercise.

Close your eyes and think of a happy moment in your life. Notice the colors, the sounds, the size of the picture. To intensify your feelings about this event try to see the colors even brighter than they are, turn up the volume to hear the laughter loudly and clearly, and enlarge the image to really imprint the pure joy you were feeling at the time. How does this make you feel?

Now think of a time that was stressful or sad. With this image I want you to make the picture smaller, turn down the colors and brightness, and even mute the sound or replace it with circus music or something else that makes you feel lighter. Does this event still seem so sad or stressful?

By manipulating your internal visions you can take back your power and retrain your brain to keep life in perspective. And by practicing this daily you will be able to react to life in a calmer and more positive way.

Michal coaches clients using many modalities including NLP. As she shows clients a warehouse full of rocks, she pays close attention to what the person is touching, feeling and saying. By doing this she is able to incorporate NLP into the personalized consultation.
